Known as the "Land of the Sunset," Morocco is an enchanting destination replete with bustling city life, extraordinary natural beauty, and unforgettable cuisine and culture. Join Minnesota Public Radio's very own, Sven Sungaard, on an amazing exploration of this special place. Together we'll discover the "Blue City" of Chefchaouen, visit UNESCO historical sites, and drive through mountains, vineyards, and expansive deserts. We'll camp in a luxury tent one night, ride camels, and haggle until our voices hurt in markets big and small.

And the food...Moroccan delicacies abound and we'll try them all. We'll tour historic sites, taste Moroccan wine, and explore our crafty sides at a traditional tilemaking workshop. And finally, this is your vacation. We'll leave you ample free time to explore on your own, and will give you recommendations for spots to consider. Come join us this spring in Morocco!

Day 1:
Fly To Casablanca, Morocco

Depart Minneapolis/St. Paul on Tuesday, April 22nd at 4:25 p.m. for an overnight flight to Casablanca, Morocco (with one stop). Arrive at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd.

Day 2:
Arrive in Casablanca and Head to Rabat, Morocco

After we land, we board our coach and head north to Rabat, the starting point for our adventure. It’s just over an hour's drive, but you’ll enjoy breathtaking coastal vistas, picturesque seaside towns, and fields of wheat, barley, and other crops. We’ll then settle in and freshen up at The Rive Hotel, a 4-star boutique hotel in the heart of the Hassan district, before dinner at the Villa Mandarine. Set in a lush garden, we’ll indulge in traditional Moroccan cuisine with a French-influenced culinary flair while we discuss the road ahead.

Day 3:
Exploring Rabat
-The Capital of Morocco

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll explore the vibrant city of Rabat, Morocco's coastal capital since 1912. With the help of our local guide giving us historical and cultural details, we’ll visit the Oudayas Kasbah, a picturesque citadel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and we’ll wander through the Andalusian Garden, a peaceful oasis filled with fragrant roses, citrus trees, and babbling fountains. We’ll check out the famed Hassan Tower, a formidable minaret that stands as a testament to Morocco's architectural prowess, and check out The Royal Palace, also known as Dar al-Makhzen or El Mechouar Essaid. It’s the grand, official residence of the King of Morocco in Rabat, and it’s surrounded by the Mechouar, a large parade ground used for public events throughout history. All of our tours give you ample free time, so you’re off on your own for lunch and shopping, and recommend both the top spots and the locals places we know. We’ll then hop back on our coach and head to the famous Blue City for the evening.

Day 4:
Chefchaouen-"The Blue City"

Arise in the Rif Mountains range and take in Chefchaouen, the city renowned for its vibrant blue-washed buildings. Known as “The Blue City,” Chefchaouen was originally built as a 15th-century fortress. We’ll spend the day getting to know her winding blue streets, and we’ll visit the Uta El Hammam, a charming square overlooking the grand mosque and medina walls. Chefchaouen boasts a bustling market area and we’ll sample local delicacies like pastilla (savory pies) and regional specialties, like creamy goat cheese. We’ll also pop out to the countryside, head into the foothills, and see the city from on high from the Ras El Maa Waterfall. Finally, we’ll dine at Restaurant Bab Ssour, known by locals as one of the best for authentic cuisine (the tagine options are amazing!).

Day 5:
Morocco's Past - Roman Ruins, Winetasting, and...

Today we embark on a scenic journey up into the mountains and through the Moroccan countryside. We leave the Blue City and head to Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities in North Africa. We’ll explore the ruins of this ancient outpost, and marvel at the well-preserved Roman architecture, including the triumphal arch, temples, and a basilica. Admire the intricate mosaics that adorn the floors of the ancient buildings, showcasing the artistic skills of the Roman Empire. We continue our journey to Meknes, the Ismailia capital famous for its 40 km long walls, stunning Bab Mansour gate, and the Jewish quarter. We’ll then head out to explore Moroccan wine at Château Roslane, the region’s famed vineyard and estate in the Middle Atlas Mountains, and we’ll of course have to participate in the wine sampling! We’ll then freshen up for dinner before resting in our 5-star boutique hotel.

Day 6:
Fez-The Cultural Heart of Morocco

Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Fez, the spiritual and cultural capital of Morocco. Explore the Bou Inania Medersa, a stunning Islamic school, and marvel at the intricate craftsmanship of its Zellige tilework. We’ll even get a hands-on experience by participating in a workshop to learn how to create these pieces, and we’ll venture into the bustling souks and bazaars, haggling for souvenirs and spices. Discover the Quaraouiyine Mosque, one of the oldest universities in the world, and explore the Nejjarine Fountain, a beautiful architectural masterpiece. We’ll conclude the day at Nejjarine, a tucked-away restaurant known for its North African cuisine.

Day 7:
Landscapes and a Desert Adventure to Remember

Embark on a scenic journey through the Moroccan countryside. Today we travel through the majestic Middle Atlas Mountains, passing by the picturesque ski resort of Ifrane and the charming town of Azrou. We explore the fortified villages along the Ziz Valley, marveling at their traditional pre-Saharian architecture, and ultimately arrive in Erfoud, a gateway to the Sahara Desert. We’ll learn about traditional Berber culture and prepare for something special. As the sun sets, we’ll embark on a camel ride into the heart of the Sahara Desert, and witness the breathtaking beauty of the sand dunes as they change color with the setting sun. Finally, we’ll enjoy a peaceful evening under the starry sky, surrounded by the tranquility of the desert. We have an amazing feast and spend the night in a luxurious desert tent (talk about glamping!), where you can relax and rest up for the adventure that continues.

Day 8:
Morocco's Todra Valley

As an option, join us to see an unforgettable sunrise over the dunes, or sleep in until you smell the coffee (or mint tea) brewing. We leave our desert oasis, but continue to explore the natural beauty of these landscapes. We’ll continue to Tinghir, famous for its palm groves, and explore the Todra Gorges, a natural wonder carved by the Todra River. The breathtaking Todra Valley offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage in Tinghir. Admire the majestic ruins of the Glaoui Palace, perched atop a rocky outcrop and wander through the Aït el Haj Ali district, a preserved Mellah with narrow, winding streets lined with traditional adobe dwellings. Finally, we proceed to Ouarzazate, passing through the Dades Valley, known as the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs" and admire the stunning mudbrick fortresses that dot the landscape. We’ll check into our hotel and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 9:
Ouarzazate to Marrakech

This part of Morocco is well known to Hollywood with films like Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Gladiator being shot. We’ll start the morning exploring the historic city of Ouarzazate, known as the "Hollywood of Morocco," and continue to Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular filming location. We’ll then cross the High Atlas Mountains and take in the views upon passing through the Tizin Tichka Pass at an elevation of 6,000+ feet. We descend to the valley and arrive in Marrakech, the vibrant “Red City,” and check into our. We’ll break things up a bit and indulge in a delicious Italian dinner at Portofino.

Day 10:
Marrakech - "The Red City"

Prepare for a vibrant journey through the heart of Morocco’s enchanting treasures! Begin by marveling at the iconic Koutoubia minaret, a symbol of Marrakech, before exploring the stunning Menara Garden, with its tranquil olive groves and reflection pools. Wander through the Bahia Palace, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture, offering a glimpse into royal life. After savoring a delicious lunch at the authentic Dar Dmana restaurant, the adventure continues with the exotic beauty of the Majorelle Garden and the artistic treasures of the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé Museums, celebrating Morocco's vibrant culture. Finally, dive into the mesmerizing chaos of Place Djemaa el Fna, where snake-charmers, storytellers, and acrobats fill the air with magic, and the bustling souks of the medina offer endless treasures to discover and take home. Conclude your day with a delicious Moroccan dinner and enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Marrakech.

Day 11:
Marrakech to Casablanca

Get ready to immerse yourself in the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine with a hands-on 3-hour cooking class! Guided by expert chefs, you’ll learn the secrets of preparing a traditional Moroccan dish, using aromatic spices and fresh, local ingredients. The experience also includes a traditional tea ceremony, where you’ll master the art of pouring Moroccan mint tea. Afterward, sit down and savor the fruits of your labor, enjoying the delicious meal you’ve created in a truly authentic culinary adventure. This unforgettable experience will leave your taste buds dancing with delight! We’ll then head to Casablanca to discover the vibrant pulse of Morocco's bustling economic capital. Begin with a visit to the majestic Hassan II Mosque, a stunning architectural masterpiece set against the Atlantic coastline. Then, explore the lively Mohammed V Square, the historic Central Market, and the Habbous Quarter, each offering a unique glimpse into the city’s rich heritage. Drive through the upscale Anfa residential area before taking in the scenic beauty of the Corniche. We end our day with a captivating dinner show at the renowned Basmane restaurant, the perfect way to toast your unforgettable final night in Casablanca.

Day 11:

Depart Casablanca

Start your day with breakfast at the hotel before heading to the airport, and take a few moments to reflect on your time in Morocco. The natural beauty, the people, the cuisine, our unique experiences, and your free time to explore…all of it. And perhaps, reflect on Humphrey Bogart’s character Rick who shares one last thought at the end of the iconic film, Casablanca - "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Just like Rick’s farewell to the city, perhaps your morning reflection marks the beginning of your own "beautiful friendship" with Morocco, as you leave with lasting memories of this special place.
